Fashion Favorites: Met Gala 2015.
Wednesday, May 06, 2015Inspired by the exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum, this year's theme is "China: Through the Looking Glass." So many famous faces showed up for this glamorous event! I love this gala because it's where two art forms collide. Seeing the red carpet photos, some dresses were underwhelming (C'mon guys! It's the Met Gala! Not the Academy Awards!), while some were just spot on. There is such beauty in seeing artistry in the form of a gown. So keeping the theme in mind, here's my favorites from the night!
Jennifer Lopez in Versace
This gown is divine. The strategic weave of the dragon with the ombré of sheer nude to red is just simply genius. I know a lot of people were saying it's such a cliche to wear a dragon, but it's a part of Chinese culture, not a stereotype.
Joan Smalls in Roberto Cavalli
It was all about the sheer gowns that evening! I love the cut-outs and one shoulder accents of the dress, making it so asymmetrical, but not to the point that it makes you uncomfortable. I love that the dress is such a deep violet that it off sets all the red, black, and white all around her. Talk about standing out.
Emily Blunt in Prada
This simple and elegant look is so lovely on Emily. The embellishments are a hat tip to the Chinese culture and the style of it all brings everything together. Blue was such an unexpected color, but it totally works for her.
Olivia Munn in J. Mendel
Simple concept, yet a stunning design. This ombre of black, red, and white just hits the nail on the head. One again, love the strategic cutouts and the exposed shoulders. She was wearing rings that I wasn't crazy for, but the gown alone is gorgeous.
Karolina Kurkova in Tommy Hilfiger
When you see it, you don't think Tommy, but that's what I loooove about the Met Gala- designers going beyond their own style to incorporate the theme. This red beauty from head to toe is just original and chic. I love the gold accents, right down to the heels. Karolina always kills it at the Met, and this was no exception.
Kate Hudson in Michael Kors
My two previous statements are the same of this ensemble: simple yet stunning... not what you think Michael Kors would design. I love the style of it all, especially that headpiece to accent her top knot bun. The sheer and detailed sequins combination was a total win.
Cara Delevigne in Stella McCartney & Bang Bang
Though the jumpsuit may be underwhelming in a sea of glamorous gowns, Cara's temporary tattoo sleeves definitely ups the ante. Thanks to the NYC tattoo artist known as Bang Bang, she becomes a canvas to his art. Cara definitely wins Most Innovative and Most Creative... if there were awards for this.
Rihanna in Guo Pei
THIS. IS. EVERYTHING. In empress fashion, RiRi brings down the house with this ensemble. She chose an unknown Chinese designer, embraced the theme, and owned the carpet. Her train actually took three people to carry because it was that heavy. Now I know there's SO much hate about this piece. (Everyone says she looks like Big Bird, a pizza, an omelette, Black Belle, etc.) But knowing that she likes to go all out, be a little different, and be original, what more do you expect? How could you NOT pay homage to the Chinese culture without all the silk and embroidery. Let's not even start on her dragon headpiece. Everything was just gorgeously on point.
Now, not everyone shone like I thought they would. Here's a list of the people I wish would've worn something different because I love them and I wanted to root for them.
- Anne Hathaway
- Jennifer Lawrence
- Kerry Washington
- Solange Knowles
- Zendaya
- Reese Witherspoon
- Sarah Jessica Parker
- Selena Gomez
- Katy Perry
